Abdominal bloating: Know what is it and how to correct it?

Abdominal bloating is the accumulation of excess gas in the stomach that makes it look puffier and large. It is a common situation that many people suffer from. It can cause muscle pains and stomach pain as it can restrict the movement of abdominal muscles.

It can happen both in men and women and is nothing to worry about. Accumulation of gas can cause discomfort and can interfere with our daily activities but in very few cases it leads to something bad.

First of all, let's understand why this condition can happen.

As most of you know, we inhale air when we eat or drink anything. This air in small amounts does not cause any discomfort but when taken in excess, it gets accumulated in GI (Gastroinsterstine tract).

This results in swollen, tight, or puffiness in the abdominal area. Two most common ways our body gets rid of excess swallowed air is by burping and flatulence.

Water can be another source of bloating. Just like gas, the accumulation of water also gives the stomach a tight look.

Some of the most common reasons for bloating are-

1. Chewing a gum

2. Drinking carbonated drinks

3. Food intolerance

4. Hormonal fluctuations

5. Wearing loose dentures

6. Eating and talking at the same time

7. Eating too fast

8. Smoking

Some medical causes which can cause abdominal bloating are-

1. Gastrointestinal disorders

2. Irritable bowel movement

3. Heartburn

4. Growth of bacteria in GI

6. Gastric dilatation-volvulus

7. Cohn's disease

8. Ulcerative colitis

However, there is very little chance that bloating is an indication of something serious. There are some tips and advice through which you can avoid it and correct it.
